If you’re new to vaping, the different terms used to describe vape accessories are probably foreign to you. With those sentiments in mind, we’ve created this post to help all the newbies out there find their bearings when navigating the world of vape technology.

The Battery or Mod

The battery is the largest part of your vape kit, and it’s what powers the entire device to heat the vape juice. Batteries, also called mods, are available in a variety of styles. If you purchase a vape pen, you use the device until the battery runs out and then throw the entire device away.

Rechargeable mods, however, often have a lithium battery and plug directly into the wall for quick and easy recharging. There are some mods that are not rechargeable, but if you purchase a vape kit, all you will need to replace is the external battery — not the entire device.

Manual vs. Automatic

When it comes to mods, you have two different options to purchase: manual or automatic. Choosing one over the other will depend on your skill level as well as how much control you want to have with your device.

A manual mod offers the most control because you press a button to start heating up the device. These types of mods are safer because they’re sealed, preventing any juice from leaking into the mod and risking damage. Since the manual battery allows you to heat up your vape juice before taking a pull, you don’t need to prime your device. This also means that you can take more pulls in a shorter amount of time.

The other option for your mod is to purchase an automatic battery. This option works by turning on when you take a pull from your device. An automatic battery uses less energy than a manual battery, meaning that your automatic mod will last longer than a manual one. On the other hand, you will need to prime your device by taking several pulls before you actually create vapor. Automatic batteries usually have a shut-off time of about six or seven seconds too, so you won’t be able to vape as much at one time. Additionally, automatic mods aren’t sealed, meaning that you need to follow all the directions for filling your device exactly in order to avoid damage to the device or injury to yourself.

Vape Tanks

The next vape accessory you’ll need is the vape tank. The tank, sometimes called a cartridge or pod, is where you’ll fill your vape juice. The tank holds the vape juice until you’re ready to vaporize it.

Like the mods, there are a variety of vape tanks to choose from. The best ones for beginners are smaller, basic tanks. Most tanks are refillable, but you may choose a disposable option as well.

As you become more experienced, you may want to try more advanced vape tanks, like sub-ohm tanks. These types of tanks help you get more flavor with each pull, but can be trickier to understand how to use. If you have any questions, feel free to ask an attendant at your vape shop for their expertise.

The Atomizer

Now that you know what makes your device work and where you’ll store your vape juice, how exactly does your device vaporize the juice? That’s where the atomizer comes in. The atomizer connects directly to the battery to absorb energy and heat up your vape juice. Each atomizer has a coil inside that helps turn the vape juice into vapor.

Depending on your priorities with your atomizer, you may choose one that has larger or smaller airflow holes. Larger airflow holes will allow you to blow larger, puffier clouds, but will limit the amount of flavor. Smaller airflow holes will deliver greater amounts of flavor, but with smaller clouds.

Coils & Wicks

Part of your atomizer is the coil, which also contains a wick. Many atomizers have disposable coils, so you can find replacements to further customize your vaping experience. We recommend sticking to coil materials like stainless steel, nickel, titanium, kanthal, or nichrome. These materials are best for those who are just starting out.

Additionally, your coil will contain a wick. The wick is what absorbs the vape juice that is then vaporized by the heated coils in the atomizer. There are different types of wick materials, but one of the most affordable materials that delivers some of the best flavor is cotton. It’s also the easiest option, making it the best to start out with.

As you continue to vape more, you may decide to try wick options like a stainless steel mesh or a silica wick. Talk to your vape shop if you have any questions about the coil and wick you should be using with your atomizer and vape device.

Rebuildables

If you’re just starting out, we recommend purchasing a vape kit that has everything you need to start your vaping experience without any hassle of trying to customize parts or assemble anything.

As you continue to learn more about vaping and your vape device, though, you may decide to start exploring other vape accessories like rebuildables. This category of vape accessories includes atomizers, coils, wicks, and more. These are a great option for those who really understand their vape device and are confident with installing different parts for a more customized vaping experience.

Vape Juice & Salts

Last, but certainly not least, is the vape juice you fill your tank with. There are literally hundreds of flavors to choose from, like berries, menthol, cream, and traditional tobacco. Vape juice, also called e-juice or e-liquids, are sold with different concentrations of nicotine — some brands even have options without nicotine. This option is great for those who want to experience all the flavors that vaping has to offer, but don’t want to consume any nicotine.

On the other hand, there are vape juice options that contain higher amounts of nicotine for those trying to quit smoking. These options are referred to as nic salts, which require a different type of atomizer to heat at the correct speed and to the right temperature for safe vaping. Make sure you’re clear when looking for vape accessories whether or not they are safe for nic salts if that’s what you intend to purchase.
